This Too Shall Pass Bible Verse

There are many famous stories and verses from the Christian Bible. One example of one of these well-known phrases is the phrase “This too shall pass”. Interestingly enough, it is actually not found in the text of the Bible but still has biblical significance. It comes from a retelling of one of the fables from the Bible.

Below, we will go over the “This too shall pass” Bible verse in greater detail, including some information such as its meaning, who said it, and some times in history that the verse has been referenced.

The Meaning of the “This Too Shall Pass” Bible Verse

Quite literally, “This too shall pass” means that everything comes and goes, and whatever is going on in a person’s life will pass in time, eventually becoming a distant memory. If we read into it more to interpret the phrase, it can also be interpreted as a saying to invoke hope, as we do hope that all things in life will come to pass. If you are going through tough times, for instance, “This too shall pass” can remind you that there are better days ahead.

You will not be dealing with such troubles forever. God and our faith also give us hope, and we must always remember that God provides for us. “This too shall pass” can be a reminder to trust in God’s plan for our life.

Who Said the “This Too Shall Pass” Bible Verse

“This too shall pass” is a phrase that is attributed to King Solomon. King Solomon, of course, was the son of David. He was the king of Israel and renowned for his incredible wisdom. Many people brought their troubles for him to be solved. The story in which he said “This too shall pass” is actually not found in the Bible at all. It is a retelling of one of the many stories of his wisdom.

The story told of how he was asked by a nameless sultan or Eastern monarch for a phrase that would be true in both good times and bad. When faced with this riddle, King Solomon replied with the phrase “This too shall pass”. We still use the phrase wisdom to this day!

Usage of the “This Too Shall Pass” Bible Verse

The “This too shall pass” Bible verse has been used to comfort many people in times of trouble. There are, however, some particular times that the phrase has been used throughout history. One of these, of course, is in the English poet Edward FitzGerald’s retelling of “Solomon’s Seal”, as we discussed earlier in this article. This is, in fact, where the phrase comes from.

Another time we saw “This too shall pass” being used in history is by the American President Abraham Lincoln, arguably one of the most famous American presidents. He used “This too shall pass” on September 30th, 1859. He retold the story of “Solomon’s Seal” as well. The story that both FitzGerald and Lincoln were retelling is thought to have originated in Jewish folklore, hence the biblical link— besides, of course, being about King Solomon, as he himself is a biblical figure.
